Report for the March 2015 Parish Council Magazine

As the snow falls and covers the ground in its white panoply, it is difficult to remember the mass of colour that flower beds throughout Kippax provided throughout last spring and summer. Nevertheless, our hardy band of 'blooming' volunteers joined by three students Katie, Charley and Ben from Brigshaw High School doing their Duke of Edinburgh course, have continued to clear up over the Winter months while preparing for the next displays of 2015. How refreshing it is to have some young blood showing such enthusiasm and commitment to the cause.

We have been weeding, pruning, litter picking and adding our compost to all our flower and shrub beds. We have enhanced the garden opposite the Library on Leeds Road by laying stones around the perimeter to improve its appearance. We then went on to plant winter bedding. We continued with our programme of bulb planting in new areas such as Cheney Basin, the Churchyard and Calvert Close. By the time you read this, those bulbs will be providing a mass of colour to brighten our lives.

Following our success in last year's Britain in Bloom competition, this year we will be in Yorkshire in Bloom so there will two judging days, one in Spring and one in Summer. We anticipate that the Spring judging will take place in late March or early April. So, there is to be no resting on our laurels as we continue to work with all groups within our community; it is this extensive community involvement that is a strength of Kippax in Bloom.

In that regard we thank everyone for their continued support, especially those anonymous donations received in Pat's Sweet Shop throughout the year. We also remain grateful to the Parish Council, our ward councillors, our sponsors, LCC Parks and Countryside, Woodend Nursery and of course our absolutely amazing band of volunteers whose currently frozen fingers will soon be warming the flower beds of Kippax.

If you feel that you could contribute in any way please drop in and see Pat at her sweet shop Tel 0113 2862283, email psamykib@aol.com or indeed contact any of the volunteers known to you.
