Report for the June 2020 Parish Council Magazine -Kippax Matters

It seems very strange writing, of course, in these most unusual of circumstances, when the condition of plants, bushes and trees is inevitably furthest from our thoughts. One hopes sincerely that by the time you read this, the light at the end of the tunnel is much brighter than it has been for some time. Whilst the circumstances are most unusual, they are of course, for us Bloomers, very frustrating. This year there is no Yorkshire in Bloom nor Britain in Bloom competitions as both have been quite rightly cancelled. However, no-one seems to have told Mother Nature so that all of that winter and spring growth including weeds and overgrown bushes and trees has carried on apace. Luckily for us all, our fantastic volunteers have continued some work around Kippax while adhering to the rules of social distancing, avoiding group meetings and keeping all tools safely cleaned. Individual volunteers have carried out some tasks suitable for one person in smaller areas and 2 in larger areas such as weeding and cutting grass. We'd like to say a big thank you to 2 fab local residents, Maggie and Charlie who've seen our struggles to keep up to everything and have stepped in to give us a hand. However, keeping safe and protecting front line workers has been the watchword.

We are pleased to tell you that we've just had confirmation that the Co-op Local Community Fund have made the 1st payment to us so the planning of our Dementia Friendly Garden can continue. Thank you to them and all the shoppers at the Co-op who've supported us. When you read this our wonderful Spring displays will have died off. We would then normally have started planting up our summer displays at the end of May, but these are not normal times and the supply of summer bedding plants is not going to be available as per our orders. As always, we will strive to do our best to plant up as we usually do and hopefully you will see lots of colour in Summer around Kippax thanks to our volunteers. We thank Jonny and Marie at Woodend Nursery, the staff at The Arium, LCC Parks and Countryside and The Locality Team who are continuing with their support and help in these difficult times. We are also very grateful to our Parish Council and our 3 local Ward Councillors for their continued support.

In the meantime, can villagers continue to support KIB by looking after your gardens as you have done in recent years and maybe also look after a bed local to your house. There are still opportunities to sponsor areas around our community so if you can help us in any way please.

In the meantime, please Keep Safe.
