Report for the December 2010 Parish Council Magazine

Gold for Kippax in Yorkshire in Bloom 2010 – At the awards ceremony held at the Royal Armouries on the 14th of September it was announced that Kippax had won the top award in its category. This is the best result we have ever achieved in this competition. Once again it’s a big WELL DONE to every body who contributed to this success. The judges were particularly impressed by the community involvement associated with our entry. For anybody requiring more details a copy of the judge’s comments are available on our website.

They say there is no rest for the wicked and so no sooner had we had we been judged on our 2010 entry than we were out working towards next years competition. The first picture below shows members of the Kippax in Bloom group working in the Kippax Surgery car park where we have tidied, planted several large phormiums along with daffodils to add some early colour. Daffodils have also been planted on the banking next to the Gibson Lane Community Centre and in St Mary’s Church yard. Also below the group can be seen clearing the overgrown banking behind the bus stop on Calvert Close. We have also been busy putting in our Spring bedding as well as giving some of the more established beds a new lease of life.

We hope everyone likes our new wooden planters from Instaplanta that we have placed outside the Co-op and near Peter’s garage on Leeds Road. Thanks to Richard Gill of Leeds City Council Floral Initiative for organising this and for his continued support.

Other projects planned over the next few months include

  1. Improving the edging around several borders

  2. Improve access between the Co-op car park and Kippax Hall Surgery car park.

  3. Reposition planters from the Co-op in locations around Cross Hills.

  4. Create a new display on Leeds Road opposite the entrance to Emley View.

The prizes for our Front Garden Competition were presented by Marie at the St Mary’s Church Fair on the 6th November. Congratulations to the winner Mr Ronald Ogden and runner up Mr Christopher May.

Kippax in Bloom are indebted to Marie and Jonny of Woodend Nurseries, Great Preston for their continued support.

Kippax through the Seasons Calendar’ – The Kippax in Bloom calendar will be available to purchase from Pats Sweets starting November (in plenty of time for Christmas). Thank you to everyone who took the trouble to submitted photographs.

Did you know you can sponsor a hanging basket on the High Street? – For £70 you can sponsor a basket for Spring and Summer, included in the cost are the plants, name plate and watering. These hanging baskets not only help with our entry in Yorkshire in Bloom but also make our High Street more colourful.

Kippax in Bloom website – Our new website is www.kippaxinbloom.com. Please feel free to visit the site where amongst other things you can see a photo gallery showing how the town looked for judging in spring and summer this year.

One problem with winning a Gold award is that it puts the pressure on to maintain the standard and we can only achieve this with your continued support. So if you are able to turn out for a couple of hours on a Sunday or Wednesday we would de glad to hear from you. However, it’s not just gardeners we need but also people to help delivering leaflets, watering plants etc. If you can help in anyway then please contact Pat Samy at:-
