Report for the December 2015 Parish Council Magazine

Kippax in Bloom : CHAMPIONS!!

Hip, Hip Hooray!!! Three cheers for the Kippax in Bloom team of committed volunteers. On Tuesday, 8th September, 'Bloomers' from across the County gathered at York Racecourse for the annual Yorkshire in Bloom Results and Awards Ceremony. Of course, everyone from every village and town goes in the hope that their efforts over the year will be recognised. Kippax is entered in the Small Urban Community category. You no doubt will imagine our delight when, not only were we awarded a gold medal, but we were also the outright winner in that category. The very best in Yorkshire. Champions indeed.

The judges thought that when they visited Kippax in July the village looked stunning. They were impressed with the various floral displays, and indeed the very number of them, the window boxes, hanging baskets, tubs in various locations and the neatness and attention to detail of all of these. They were also interested in Town Hills close, the Growing Zone, the Wild Life Garden on Gibson Lane and the extent of community involvement through the Kippax Art Society, the local schools and community groups such as the Cubs, Scouts, Guides and Brownies. They also commented, as judges do every year, on the neat and tidy state of residential gardens throughout the village. They commented on the vast difference that Kippax in Bloom had made to the village since its inception some 12 years ago.

Of course, we do not rest on our laurels and the work has resumed to try and ensure that the next year will be just as successful as we represent Yorkshire in the Britain in Bloom competition which we regard as quite an honour. So when you see the band of volunteers in their high-viz vests on Sunday morning, whatever the weather, just give them a little wave! Or even a cup of tea or coffee would be welcomed. (Hope that's not too cheeky a request.)

On Thursday 1st October, we were gathered in the Moorgate to celebrate our success and to present the awards for our Garden competitions, a very fitting end to the proceedings. Congratulations to our winners. Front Garden Winner Mrs Pat Hill Earlswood Cres, Rear Garden Winner Mr Joe Ryan Sandgate Dr, Front & Rear Winner Mrs Susan Gable Brigshaw Lane, Conservation Award Chris & Andrew Wilcock Westfield Lane. Thanks to everyone who entered and well done.

Winners 2015 with Pat KIB & Marie from Woodend Nurseries.

By the time you read this, Christmas will again be in sight. Hopefully, by then, you will see the benefits of the kind of preparatory work that is a feature of the autumn and winter months that will be the bedrock of the colourful displays in spring and summer. It must also be pointed out that on judging day in July, thanks to KIB volunteers, Kippax was litter-free. Oh that, that could be the case throughout the year.

Once again, our great thanks go to the Parish Council, our local ward councillors, the Parks and Countryside Department of Leeds City Council, Woodend Nursery, our sponsors and of course our volunteers. Now let's see if we can rock in Britain in Bloom 2016!

We are always on the look out for more volunteers to join our group but if you feel that you don't have the time then why not help us by sponsoring a hanging basket or flower bed.
